Forschungsschwerpunkte/Projekte

My current research focus is the investigation of human health effects from exposure to environmental hazards. One major research project is the investigation of short- and long-term cardiovascular health effects of air pollution within the framework of the Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study. Major results include the association of long-term residential traffic exposure with the prevalence of coronary heart disease and the degree of coronary calcification, pointing to atherogenesis as a possible important mechanism of PM action on cardiovascular health. Research activities encompassing the development of the exposure assessment (historical exposures, traffic exposure by vehicle type, personal exposure modelling) and the investigation of possible mechanisms of cardiovascular health effects like the induction of hypertension and inflammation are currently under way.
For the investigation of short-term effects of particulate matter on the triggering of acute coronary events, we are linking data from the myocardial infarction registry in Essen, a clinic based registry for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarctions, to the hourly air pollution concentrations, using a case-crossover design.
A further environmental health project encompasses the investigation of the cause-specific mortality in Essen during the 2003 and 2006 heat waves in Germany.

I am also engaged in several projects in the area of general and clinical epidemiology. Currently I am leading the quality assurance measures and biometrical evaluation of a population-based follow-up study funded by the German Phlebologic Society on the incidence of phlebological diseases and their risk factors.
A further epidemiological project consists of the evaluation of the newly installed population-wide mammography screening for breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to investigate aspects of feasibility and effectiveness of the screening program in the field phase.
Finally, I am currently participating in a number of projects and proposals led by my clinical colleagues at the University Hospital of Essen, such as the investigation of the role of thyroid gland function on the success of artificial reproduction, the evaluation of chronic psychosocial stress on the time until pregnancy in women desiring to start a family, and the role of early surgical interventions in the inflammatory reaction after multiple trauma.
